Founded in 1977, the Pleasanton Girls Softball league is a non-profit, tax-exempt corporation whose purpose is to provide recreational and competitive girls' fast pitch softball programs for the communities of Pleasanton, Dublin and Sunol. We field teams starting with girls in kindergarten all the way through high school. Girls of any ability are welcome, and the main purpose is to teach/learn the great game of softball and to have fun. Divisions are provided for "Recreational" teams, intended for beginner to accomplished players, and also more competitive teams, intended for girls with above average ability and experience and/or players interested in a more competitive environment. We typically have more than 800 girls register each year, playing on 70+ teams in 10 different divisions. We play all of our games in Pleasanton, primarily at the Pleasanton Sports Park at 5800 Parkside Drive. Our season runs in the Spring, typically March thru May with a playoff tournament in early June. In addition, we sponsor "traveling teams" in the summer, as part of the very competitive ASA sanctioned Junior Olympic B program. The traveling teams (AKA Phantom) play throughout northern California, and historically have been very successful, with many of them going on to Regional and National Tournaments where they have done very well, earning nationwide respect for Pleasanton's girls softball program. We sponsor the annual "PGSL Summer Classic" tournament for Junior Olympic B traveling teams in Pleasanton at the Sports Park shortly after the 4th of July. This tournament is one of the most anticipated and popular tournaments in the area with at least 50 teams typically attending. A side effect of PGSL's competitive programs is the preparation of girls for high school softball. Many girls who have come up through PGSL have gone on to play high school softball and some to the college level. PGSL's teams have always been competitive in all divisions, however, winning is not everything, and we hope that the girls in our program will learn other values such as good sportsmanship and teamwork from their softball experience. To that end, we formed a partnership in 2000 with the Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) based at Stanford University, to promote positive coaching and sportsmanship in our League.
