A connected community of diverse backgrounds determined to improve the lives of children around the world – this embodies the spirit of UNICEF, or United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund. “UNICEF works for a world in which every child has a fair chance in life,” and there are five priorities addressed by UNICEF — Child Survival and Development, Basic Education and Gender Equality, HIV/AIDS and Children, Child Protection, and Policy Advocacy and Partnership. You can read more about what UNICEF does at http://www.unicef.org/whatwedo/, for example how climate change affects children and which issues affecting children are planned to be addressed.
There are UNICEF clubs within our Pleasanton community as well, both at Amador Valley and Foothill High Schools. The objective of these clubs is to raise money to donate to the UNICEF charity and help impoverished kids around the world. One of the ways the clubs do this is by hosting events.
This year, Amador’s UNICEF Club is hosting a UNICEF Gala in coordination with Amador’s Interact Club, Amador Cancer Society, and Foothill’s UNICEF Club. This event is a talent show that will showcase the skills of many students and will feature a variety of performances that include Kung Fu, singing, dance, improv, orchestra, and a special performance by Dougherty Valley High School’s Bhangra group. All of the funds from the Gala will go directly to Amador/Foothill UNICEF, Amador Interact, and Amador Cancer Society.
The event will take place at the Amador Valley High School Theater on March 25 from 7-9 pm, and doors open at 6:30 pm; everyone is invited and welcome. Tickets go on pre-sale at $8 per ticket (to be sold by UNICEF club members before the event), and they are $10 at the door. Semi-formal attire is optional, but appreciated. The MCs are Katie Gray and Michael Grozier, who have been MCs for Amador Valley’s rallies before.
