What is an Icicle? Is it “a hanging piece of ice formed from dripping water as it freezes” or delightful rolls of ice cream that is intriguing to watch getting made right in front of your eyes? You choose! Stroll over to 600 Main Street, Pleasanton to experience the latter. Get ready to pack some patience for standing in line to see your ice cream engineered from scratch. At seven dollars a cup, it’s pricey but worth experiencing a personalized ice cream with unlimited toppings. As the days get warmer, the line at Icicles is sure to get even longer.
Icicles opened its doors in March, and I got an opportunity to speak with Savannah Choate, a senior at Amador Valley High School, who works there creating the best ice cream. She says, “At Icicles, it doesn’t feel like a job; it’s a very friendly and fun environment where my coworkers are the same age as me.” Savannah is a shift lead, and she ensures that all the operations are running smoothly. She notes that Sunday is the busiest, recommends Oreo Blast which is the most popular, and notes that most employees are from the local high schools. Icicles is currently hiring (email your resume to Dennis at pleasanton@iciclescreamroll.com), and there is a two day training to help jump start one’s role at Icicles. I headed to Icicles to see for myself what the buzz is all about and ended up with a cup of Oreo Blast in my hand. Its simply delightful taste left me wanting to try other flavors such as Nutella and mango.
Icicles started out in the streets of Thailand and has now made its mark in the Bay Area. Simple ingredients in each liquid cup is poured over a very cold metal surface, the rolls are then uniquely hand crafted and sent to the topping station where an unlimited number of toppings of your choice, from fresh berries to cheesecake bites to mochi, create a personalized flavor. No wonder this experience has everyone screaming for Icicles in Pleasanton.
