- I first met Vidyuth while being in the Amador Valley Marching Band and noticed what an accomplished musician he is. Thus, I decided to interview him and find out how music has shaped his life. Why did you originally decide to join the band? How did it impact your life?I joined the band as an outlet and I thought it’d be fun in sixth grade. I feel like it gives me a break honestly. I lose all my worries while playing music.Which instruments do you like the most and why?I like the trombone and the French horn if played well. They’re both unique: the trombone is the only instrument with a slide; the French horn is like a combination of brass and woodwind because lots of times you will find it having melodies with woodwinds. What do you think you might want to do with music in the future?I want to be a professional musician, but also teach inner-city kids who aren’t exposed to the same opportunities as I am to experience and learn more about music. What other musical activities do you participate in outside of the band?I do Oakland youth orchestra, marching band, and do honor bands. I attend the Oakland youth orchestra every Sunday for 4 hours and it’s a symphony orchestra. I auditioned to be in it and got in. Honors bands I also try out for and hope to be a part of them in the future. I have been in All-State Honor Band in seventh and eighth grade and made the All-Northern honor band in ninth grade. I also participated in East Bay jazz, which is an all-star jazz program for high school kids. What is your favorite piece of music and why?I wouldn’t say I have a favorite piece but I have a few pieces I like:
- California – David Maslanka: It is incredibly beautiful and so simple but he has a way of making the song enjoyable to the audience and the musicians.
- Too Much of a Good Thing – Andrew Neu: It’s a great jazz piece for a high school band to push itself and features every section.
- Symphony No. 9 – Dvorak: It’s a great orchestral piece with so much contrast and so many voices being heard.
